2010 Events

Broadway United Reformed Church Walsall Autumn Fair - Saturday, 27th November

All proceeds of this extravaganza were donated to charity - Walsall Samaritans being joint recipients together with International Rescue Corps.  There was a wide range of stalls, including: home-made cakes, books, jewellery, jigsaws, toys, bulbs & plants, hand-made goods, bric-a-brac. Home-made afternoon teas were served - and the ringing of a bell heralded the attendance of Father Christmas. A huge amount of effort went into the whole event. We feel privileged to have such support in our local community.

Walsall Volunteer Awards - Thursday November 18th Volunteer receiving Certificate from the Mayor of Walsall

Representatives of Walsall Samaritans attended the Walsall Volunteer Awards hosted by Walsall Voluntary Action, where the Contribution to the Well-Being of Others Award was won by a volunteer who has been with the branch since it started in 1969, and was formerly a member of Nottingham Samaritans, and has only recently stood down from duties at the age of almost 90 due to health issues.

Excerpts from the event programme:

"
Every day, volunteers make a difference to the lives of people living in the Borough of Walsall, whether they are helping run a pensioners' club or playgroup, giving advice and support to vulnerable people, organising a local sports group or resident's association, these are the people who help bring our communities together."

" Contribution to the Well-Being of Others Award
At the heart of every voluntary and community organisation lies a commitment to making a difference and improving the quality of life for others. This Award honours the positive impact that voluntary work has upon the life chances of others.
"

Two more long-serving volunteers also received nomination certificates presented by the Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Gary Clarke.

We see it as great recognition for the branch and the work of Samaritans, as well as acknowledgement of the long years of service by our dedicated volunteers.

Saturday July 10th

2010's Samaritans Smart Car tour of the country came to Walsall where volunteers joined the drive to make this year’s 24:7 national awareness campaign the best yet with the first-ever national  tour, sponsored by Admiral.

Motoring through England, Scotland and Wales, the iconic green Smart Car zoomed into action on Saturday 10 July  reaching its final pit stop in Birmingham on Saturday 24 July, visiting over 175 Samaritans branches across the three nations and covering almost 5,000 miles during its two-week tour, with drivers including local MPs, mayors, celebrity supporters and Samaritans volunteers.

The car being on the road day and night, is all about raising awareness of Samaritans’ 24:7 service for people in emotional distress and those at risk of suicide.

Arriving at Walsall on 10th July at 2 pm the car was welcomed by a group of volunteers and supporters

Saturday 24 July – 24/7 – is the perfect day to raise awareness of Samaritans’ round-the-clock availability. The charity is the only service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, offering support to anyone experiencing emotional distress.

The branch received messages of support from local MPs David Winnick and Valerie Vaz.

Saturday June13th

Walsall Market is regarded as the traditional heart of the town and has been in existence since 1219. A sunny Saturday in June found us  with a varied selection of goodies for all the town's  bargain-hunters-with-a-heart-of-gold! We raised in excess of £275 for our funds.

Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd May

A Garden Party on two successive days in May is not guaranteed fine weather in our British climate! But what turned out to be an exceptionally warm and sunny weekend was a great help to hosts Mick and Eleanor, regular supporters of the branch along with their friends at St Thomas of Canterbury Church and Parish Centre. Admission price £1.50 included tea/coffee and biscuits. Strawberries and Ice-cream were a popular and very welcome choice for visitors to the sun-soaked garden. An exhibition and sale of art, a raffle, book and bric-a-brac stalls were among the features that helped the event to raise a stunning £500! What an achievement!

Monday May10th

A very special Guest Speaker attended our AGM this year, marking our 40th Anniversary, Sophie Andrews is not only the current Chair of the Samaritans movement, but a published author of the book "Scarred" and an engaging and inspirational speaker.

Sophie spoke to an audience of around 60 people - volunteers, supporters and friends - about her life and how she first came in contact with Samaritans and later became part of the organisation.

A number of Volunteers who had served 25 years or more at the branch were presented with framed pictures and Certificates of Recognition by the Chair of the Organisation, and the Branch Director.

Saturday 6th March

Aldridge Methodist Church held their monthly charity Coffee Morning in support of the branch -  the home made cakes, pies and preserves were superb and the fair trade tea and coffee was superb value! £435 is the amazing sum raised from this event.

Friday 12th February

A group of local footie fansTeam admin who won the footie game, raising £186 took to the pitch to give Samaritans a ‘leg-up’ with their funding by playing a charity football match. Teams from the Customer Admin and Collections departments of Walsall based company Homeserve Membership Ltd raised money through collections, cake sales and bingo games.

Two charities benefited from the funds raised with the football game deciding how the cash was split. With the first goal being scored just 3 minutes into a very lively game the match ended with a 6-4 win for the team from Customer Administration who championed Samaritans cause and donated £186 to the  Walsall & District branch.
The event took place at Goals, Darlaston.
