Monsters, ghosts and zombies took to the netball field at Elmore Green Primary School, Bloxwich on Wednesday 11th July in aid of Samaritans’ ’24:7’ nationwide July fundraising and awareness raising event..

Teams for the monstrous maul came from Abbey Primary School, Mossley,  staff at Elmore Green School, and members of the Customer Administration department of Walsall-based company Homeserve (GB) Ltd.

Homeserve Horrors, in "Thriller"-style zombie outfits finished in third position, while Abbey's 'skeleton crew' team werePicture: Homeserve "Horrors" Netball Team runners up and first place went to Elmore Green Gremlins - they played a devil of a game ... or maybe the green face paint just put the frighteners on the others!

But there is a serious side to all this. Samaritans’ month of events takes its name not only from the 24th day of the 7th month which is its focus, but also from the fact that Samaritans' confidential emotional support service is available to everyone, everywhere 24 hours a day, every day of the week. Samaritans Walsall Branch Picture: A "Green Gremlin" from the winning teamalone receives around 13,000 contacts a year, and around 20% of people who talk to our volunteers are expressing suicidal thoughts or feelings. The branch is struggling to raise the cash it needs to remain in operation – our 40 trained volunteers each give around 200 hours of their time free every year, but running costs such as phone lines, training materials, utilities bills and other overheads mean we need at least £16,000 a year to avoid closure.

The event raised £416 towards our running costs.

Saturday 2nd June 2007

A team of volunteers staffed a second-hand stall on Walsall Market and raised £133. It was good to meet all the people who were out shopping on a fine sunny day.

Saturday 24th March 2007

Three of our volunteers raised £50 for us at a Table-Top Sale at St Thomas of Canterbury Parish Centre, Dartmouth Avenue, Coalpool. Thanks to everyone who donated goods or visited the stall.

Saturday 3rd March

A group of Samaritans fundraisers hit the hotspots of  Walsall Town Centre for a Pub Crawl collection. A night out to help us fund our 'nights in' supporting others - the price of one drink in the pub is enough to cover the total cost of answering a call from someone who is suicidal or in emotional distress - nearly £130 was raised.

Sunday 25th February

St Thomas of Canterbury Church raised £420 for us with an Afternoon Tea and Silent Auction at their Parish Centre in Dartmouth Avenue, Coalpool, Walsall. Many thanks to all who took part in the event.

Friday 16th February

We collected almost £240 (that's nearly 5 days running costs for the branch) at Walsall Football Club Logo: Walsall Football Club (founded 1888)(Bescot Stadium) when Walsall played Lincoln City - thanks to the Saddlers for allowing us to do this, and thanks to the fans and supporters who put money in our buckets and tins.

Saturday 27th January

Bentley Methodist Church held a coffee morning in aid of our branch. The event raised £160 and Image:Presentation of a cheque from Bently Methodist Churchwe were also presented with two other cheques from the Walsall Methodist Circuit bringing the total to around £300 - a much needed top-up to our funds.
