| Welcome to Samaritans of Walsall & District Latest News: Confess Your Stress! Thanks to You! Snowdon Climb Sam's Life Thousands of people contact us every year by phone, face to face, or by email. Many of them are from our local area - Walsall, Sandwell, Darlaston, Lichfield, Great Barr, Cannock....but Samaritans national number and call distribution means phone calls can be from anywhere in the UK, and emails can be from anywhere in the world! From place to place, circumstances and cultures can vary greatly, but the emotions people feel remain pretty constant. Since the Walsall & District Branch started in 1969, Samaritans has continued to develop with the changing times, yet many of the basics remain. We realised early on the value of ordinary people listening to others at times of emotional distress - that's still what we do. Technology has advanced - back in 1969 few people had a phone at home and would have to go on a long waiting list to have one installed; mobile phones were years into the future; emailing from a home computer would have seemed like fantasy. Samaritans has embraced new developments that enhance our service - email is now the fastest growing means of contact and takes its place alongside telephone, letter, and face to face contacts. Our skills are more finely "tuned" by the award winning training we have pioneered and developed over the years. But just as a car remains primarily a means of transport - and an Mp3 player is another way to listen to music, Samaritans is still about confidential support at times of crisis and despair, but has grown from its origins as a "999 for the suicidal" to become an organization which aims to promote emotional health for everyone, everywhere. For nearly 40 years, Samaritans has been there for people in Walsall and the surrounding towns. The branch is staffed entirely by trained volunteers, and has to raise its own funds to cover running costs. It was founded in November 1969 - the 100th branch in the country to open - and some of the original volunteers are still active members. Our centre, a single storey building with its own car park, is located in Bott Lane - not far from the town centre; for further details see How to find us. Our branch telephone number is 01922 624000. Walsall Samaritans statistics 2008
